Working Principle of the Seawater Desalination Membrane
The seawater reverse osmosis membrane operates by using a certain pressure to separate the solvent from a solution through the reverse osmosis (or semi-permeable) membrane. This process works in the opposite direction of natural osmosis, which is why it's called reverse osmosis. Depending on the osmotic pressure of various materials, applying pressure greater than the osmotic pressure can achieve the purposes of separation, extraction, purification, and concentration.
Since seawater has a high salt content, when using a semi-permeable membrane to separate seawater from freshwater, freshwater naturally diffuses through the membrane into the seawater side. This raises the liquid level on the seawater side until a certain pressure is generated, at which point the diffusion stops-this is called osmosis. However, if pressure greater than the osmotic pressure is applied to the concentrated solution side, the solvent's flow direction reverses, moving from the concentrated solution to the diluted solution side. This process is known as seawater desalination via reverse osmosis.
By selecting and using a seawater reverse osmosis membrane, the solutes in the solution can be separated from the solvent, making this technique widely applicable for the purification and concentration of various liquids. The most common use of reverse osmosis technology is to remove inorganic ions, bacteria, viruses, organic substances, and colloids from raw water, producing high-quality pure water. Reverse osmosis technology is a high-tech membrane separation method characterized by its small pore size.
